Heath Bell gets to date the starting quarterback, but what about that quiet guy in the back of the class with the dark rimmed glasses and the paint covered overalls? You don’t have to be Zach Siler to realize there’s value in those overalls. You won’t win any popularity contests (or Saves categories) with guys like Luke Gregerson but they can still provide a great deal of help to at least three other important pitching categories; K, ERA, WHIP.
Grabbing setup men off the wire is like going to a NASCAR race hoping for a crash. You’re basically hoping for the current closer to blow a tire/elbow/. Unfortunately, a lot of those setup men are hardly good at pitching. See: Hawkins,Latroy
So why not fill up one of your pitching slots with a guy like Luke Gregerson? A line with a 1.82 ERA, 0.49 WHIP, 28 Ks in 24.2 IP has to be useful enough to roster, right? As long as you can get past those paint covered overalls.
Other helpful relievers not currently racking up saves include:
Sean Marshall, Edward Mujica, Tyler Clippard, Evan Meek, Arthur Rhodes (yes, THAT Arthur Rhodes) and Clay Hensley
