Former Major League scout (with the emphasis on former), Dave Perkin recently had this to say about future Hall of Famer Bryce Harper’s swing: “He has a major hole – outside corner at the knees. Unless he proves he can hit that stuff, he’s going to be a bust.”
Let me get this straight. If Harper can’t hit the ultimate pitcher’s pitch, he’s never going to make it in this league? Yeah, him and about 99% of all baseball players ever. That would be like a scout saying, “Sure, Strasburg has an incredible fastball, curveball, and changeup, but sometimes he lets the hitters make contact with the ball. If he keeps that up, he’s going to be a bust.”
Now I know Harper has a long way to go before proving if he can live up to his hype, but he’s 17 years old, and if his only weakness is a pitch that’s knee high on the black, I like his chances to make it. With insight like that, it’s no wonder this guy is a former scout.
